Day 10: A bit of Ripleys between Peterborough and Hawker

As we only had a short trip today, we spent some time exploring the area.

The landscape around Peterborough was drier than all of the areas we have been to previously, yet this appears to be more fertile land with crops and livestock evident.  The town itself is a step back in time with old stone buildings and bullnosed verandahs aplenty.

The nearby hamlet of Terowie and Yongala were of interest once again due to old buildings. Terowie in particular had a number of well reserved examples.

Our highlight of the day was Magnetic Hill, about 20k from Orroroo.  The motorhome braved 8k of dirt, slowly - very slowly - however the final destination was worth it.  When you reach a particular spot part way down a small hill, a sign tells you to turn off your engine and put your car in neutral with brakes off and your car will roll up hill. We can tell you that it worked. Never mind that our car is a 7.7m, 4,490kg GVM motorhome.  It actually went faster, the higher it got up the hill and it worked irrespective of whether the motorhome was facing up or down the hill.  Believe it or not, but we have the video to prove it.

Orroroo is a very well kept town with a sense of humour.  Firstly because it has corrugated roo scultures at both ends of the town and secondly because they put bunny ears on the sculptures for Easter.  There is a 500+ year old red gum on the western outskirts of town and the picture we loaded to the blog earlier gives you some idea of its girth.

On arrival in Hawker, we treated ourselves to a pub dinner. We will spend  bit of time here tomorrow before heading to Rawnsley Park Station near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges for Easter.  We will be out of mobile contact for the next 5 or so days and won't be updating the blog until Tuesday next week.  In the meantime, have a happy Easter.
